AI is saying wrong things about your business? Here's what to do

Updated: 4 August 2026

When AI says wrong things about you, the cause is almost always your own data: outdated or contradictory information circulating on the web. There's no correction button — you fix it by changing the source, unifying your details everywhere, and waiting for the models to refresh.

Why it happens

Models synthesise from many sources of differing age and reliability. If your address changed last year but three directories still list the old one, the model sees the old one in more places and prefers it.

The second common cause is identity ambiguity. If another business has a similar name, a model can conflate the two and attribute details to you that aren't yours.

First, find out exactly what's being said

Ask the models directly about your business, with different phrasings, and record what each one says. Often the error isn't everywhere — one model has it right and the others don't, which points to the source responsible.

Fix the source, not the model

You can't tell ChatGPT it's wrong and have it remember. What you can change is what it finds next time.

In practice: update your site, your Google Business Profile, the directories you're listed in, your social profiles. Request a correction where the information sits on a third-party site someone else controls.

Make the correct version stronger

Beyond removing the error, reinforce the truth: state it explicitly in visible text on your page, put it in structured data, and make sure it repeats consistently across every source you control.

Consistency is your tool: when every source says the same thing, there's no room for a wrong version.

Then be patient

Corrections take time to reach the models — typically weeks to months, depending on how often they refresh. Regular measurement shows you when it landed.

Frequently asked questions

Can I report the error to OpenAI or Google?

There are reporting channels for serious or harmful errors and they're worth using. For ordinary inaccuracies, fixing the source is faster and more effective.

AI is confusing me with another business — what do I do?

Strengthen your distinct identity: full legal name, address, structured data with sameAs pointing to your official profiles. The more clearly you're distinguished, the less it confuses you.

It says I offer a service I discontinued — why does it persist?

Because the old information still exists somewhere: an archived page, a directory, an old article. Find it and update it; if you don't control it, request the change.
