How to write content that AI will quote

Updated: 4 August 2026

AI quotes text that answers directly, stands on its own and is easy to lift out. In practice: put the short answer at the top of the page, write headings as questions, make every paragraph self-contained, and give specific facts instead of generalities.

What “self-contained” means

A model composing an answer takes excerpts, not whole pages. If one of your paragraphs only makes sense after reading the three before it, it can't be used.

The test: take a paragraph out of the page and read it alone. Can someone tell which business and which topic it's about? If not, rewrite it so it stands by itself.

The answer comes first

Classic copy builds towards the answer: intro, analysis, conclusion. Answer-shaped content does the opposite — it gives the answer in two or three sentences up front, then supports it.

That serves both the reader in a hurry and the model looking for something quotable.

Headings that are questions

“Services” matches no question anyone asks. “How much does a kitchen renovation cost?” matches exactly what the customer types.

Use the real questions you hear on the phone. It's the best source of headings you'll find.

Specific instead of general

Models prefer to quote something carrying information: numbers, timeframes, names, locations. “Serving customers across Greece since 2012, based in Thessaloniki” is quotable. “We offer high-quality services” is not.

Every time you write a general adjective, ask: could I replace this with a fact?

The practical test

  • Read the first paragraph of each key page — does it answer, or just introduce?
  • Look at your headings: how many read like a customer question?
  • Count the specific facts per page. If it's zero, start there.
  • Add an FAQ with the five questions you're asked most often.

Frequently asked questions

Doesn't this ruin my tone of voice?

It doesn't have to. Answer-shaped is about structure, not voice. You can be just as personal — you just put the substance first.

How long should the copy be?

Length isn't the factor. A clear 600-word page that answers properly is worth more than 2,000 words of generalities.

Does adding FAQ schema help?

Yes, as long as the answer text is exactly the same as the visible text on the page. Otherwise it breaches the guidelines.
