Which directories are worth being in — and which aren't
Updated: 2 September 2026
A directory listing has value for AI when the directory belongs to your industry, not when it's general. A directory where dozens of unrelated professions sit side by side doesn't help a model understand what you do — while one dedicated to your speciality states it clearly, once, correctly.
Why general directories don't help
In a directory that contains everything, your listing is one line among thousands of unrelated ones. The model draws no industry signal from it, because the environment itself means nothing.
Worse: in some of them the categorisation is careless, so you end up filed under the wrong category — adding noise instead of signal.
How to recognise a directory that counts
- It addresses one profession or industry, not everyone.
- Listings have structure: speciality, area, services — not just name and phone number.
- Its pages surface in searches for your industry.
- A real customer would use it to find someone like you.
Free and paid
Most industry directories offer a free basic listing: name, description, link. That's enough for the signal to exist — your name appearing alongside your category.
Paid placements buy visibility inside the directory, not necessarily more weight with the models. Start with the free listing in two or three correct directories before paying for one.
Two or three, not twenty
The “more listings is better” logic belongs to an earlier era of SEO. Today the value is in consistency, not volume.
Two or three correct directories with a complete, current and identical profile are worth more than twenty half-filled listings with different details in each.
What to do first
- Ask an AI which directories exist for your industry, then verify they actually work.
- See where the competitors who appear in the answers are listed.
- Pick two or three and complete a full profile, with exactly the same details everywhere.
- Note where you're listed, so you can update them when something changes.
Frequently asked questions
How do I tell an active directory from an abandoned one?
Look at whether listings are recent, whether the site is maintained, and whether its pages surface in search. An abandoned directory won't hurt you, but it offers nothing.
Is it worth paying for a listing?
Only after you've exhausted the free ones in the right directories. And only if the directory brings real customers — then you're paying for that, not for AI.
There's no directory for my industry in Greece.
Look at international ones that accept Greek businesses, and at professional associations or chambers — their member directories work the same way.
