GEO for local services: get found by AI in “near me” searches
Updated: 4 August 2026
For a local service business, GEO means being mentioned by AI when someone asks “[trade] near me” or “[trade] in [area]”. You win it with a strong local footprint: a complete Google Business Profile, reviews, absolute consistency of details, and pages that state your area and service explicitly.
Why local services have an advantage
“Near me” questions are among the most common in AI, and local competition is far thinner than national. A plumber in one suburb competes with dozens, not thousands.
At the same time, most local professionals have no site at all, or one page with a phone number. The bar for standing out is low.
Area plus service, written explicitly
The model needs to see the connection between what you do and where. A page that says only “Plumbing services — call …” isn't enough.
Name the areas you serve, and separate the services: drain clearing, water heaters, installations. Ideally one page per core service, mentioning the neighbourhoods you cover.
Google Business Profile is the foundation
For local services, the Google Business Profile is among the most reliable sources feeding the models. Fill it in completely: category, hours, service area, photos, services.
And above all, reviews. For a local professional, reviews are the strongest trust signal you can build — and the easiest one to ask for.
Consistent details everywhere
Name, address and phone must be exactly the same on your site, Google, directories and social profiles. Different numbers or name variants split the signal and leave the model unsure whether it's the same business.
What to do first
- Ask ChatGPT “[your service] in [your area]” and see whether you appear.
- Complete your Google Business Profile in full.
- Ask satisfied customers for reviews, systematically.
- Build pages per service that name the areas you cover. Re-measure every month.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need a site, or is Google enough?
The Google profile is the foundation, but a simple site with pages per service and area gives AI content to draw from. The two together work far better than either alone.
I cover many areas — should I build a page for each?
Only if you have something substantive to say about each. Dozens of near-identical pages with a swapped place name is an old tactic that doesn't help. A few meaningful ones are better.
How many reviews do I need?
There's no magic number. What matters is that they're genuine, recent and keep coming — a steady flow counts for more than a big total that stopped two years ago.
