Your Google Business Profile and what it means for AI
Updated: 2 September 2026
A Google Business Profile isn't just for maps. It's the most structured public statement of what you do and where — and because its data is reproduced across countless sources, it becomes one of the steadiest identity signals a language model finds for a local business.
Why it matters beyond Google
Models don't necessarily read your profile directly. But the details you declare there travel: they appear in directories, on sites that pull the data, in reviews, in third-party mentions.
So the profile becomes the source of truth for your name, category and location. When those are correct and stable, every other signal lines up on top of them.
Category is the single most important field
The primary category you pick is effectively the answer to “what are you”. If it's wrong or too broad, every other signal struggles to connect you to the right questions.
Choose the most specific category that describes you accurately, not the widest one. Secondary categories exist for the rest — don't confuse them with the primary.
What to fill in and what to leave blank
- Description: say what you do, for whom and where, in the words a customer would use. Not a slogan.
- Services: name them one by one instead of one generic entry. It's one of the few places you declare your scope in structured form.
- Hours, phone, address: current, and identical to your site, character for character.
- Questions & answers: the section almost everyone ignores, even though it's pure answer-shaped content.
The mistake most people make
They fill the profile in once and forget it. Hours change, services expand, the phone number changes — and the profile falls behind.
An outdated profile isn't merely useless; it's actively harmful, because it creates conflicting details between sources. And inconsistency is exactly what makes a model avoid naming you.
What to do first
- Check that the primary category is the most specific accurate one, not the broadest.
- Rewrite the description in the customer's words, not in marketing language.
- Add your services one by one and answer 3-5 real questions.
- Compare your details word for word against your site and fix the differences.
Frequently asked questions
I have no physical premises. Does this apply to me?
Yes. There's a profile type for businesses that serve an area without a visitable address. Category and service area still matter.
If I fix the profile, will ChatGPT name me?
Not on its own. It's an identity foundation, not a switch. Without it, though, every other signal is built on unstable ground.
How often should I update it?
Whenever something real changes, plus a general review each quarter. Consistency matters more than frequency.
