Which structured data (schema) actually matters for AI

Updated: 4 August 2026

Structured data (schema.org) gives AI clear facts instead of text it has to interpret. The few that genuinely matter: Organization or LocalBusiness for who you are, Service or Product for what you offer, FAQPage for customer questions, and Article for your content. The rest is usually noise.

What schema actually does

A model reading your page has to infer who you are, what you do and where. Schema states it explicitly, in a structured form that leaves no room for misreading.

It isn't a magic ranking button. It's clarification — it lowers the chance of being misunderstood or skipped because something wasn't clear.

The four that actually matter

  • Organization (or LocalBusiness if you have a physical presence): name, logo, address, contact details, sameAs pointing to your profiles. The foundation of your identity.
  • Service or Product: what exactly you offer, who it's for, in which area. This is where the connection to your category is made.
  • FAQPage: your customers' questions with your answers — the most easily quotable material for a model.
  • Article: for blog content, with dates and author.

sameAs is underrated

The sameAs field links your business to its official profiles: LinkedIn, listings, social networks. This helps models establish that all those mentions refer to the same entity.

It's one line of work with disproportionate value, especially if your name isn't unique.

What to avoid

Don't add Review or AggregateRating markup you write about yourself. It breaches Google's guidelines, risks a penalty, and is exactly the signal that makes a business look untrustworthy.

Also don't duplicate types: if Organization is defined in your layout, don't redefine it on every page — reference it instead.

How to check what you have

Google's Rich Results Test shows what's readable on your page and where the errors are. Start there before adding anything — many platforms already output schema automatically, and you may have more than you think.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a developer?

Not always. Most CMSs and SEO plugins output the basics automatically. A developer is needed for specialised fields or if you want manual control.

Does schema guarantee AI will mention me?

No. It's necessary infrastructure, not a sufficient condition. Without authority signals and substantive content, schema alone won't do it.

How many types are “enough”?

Four implemented properly are worth more than fifteen half-filled. Start with your identity and your services.
