SEO vs GEO: the difference and why you need both
Updated: 15 July 2026
SEO optimizes for engines that return links (Google); GEO optimizes for engines that return answers (ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini). They're not rivals — they share foundations, but you win each one differently. In practice, you need both.
The core difference: 10 links vs 1 answer
In SEO you rank in a list of results and the user chooses. In GEO, AI synthesizes one answer with two or three names — you're in or you're out.
So in SEO you fight for position; in GEO you fight to exist inside the one paragraph the customer reads. There's no “second page” in an AI's answer.
What they share
Clean, structured content; technical health (crawlable, fast site); authority through mentions. A good SEO base helps GEO too — it just isn't enough on its own.
Where they differ in practice
- Keywords vs questions: GEO wants natural, conversational questions (“who should I choose for…”).
- Meta tags vs answer-shaped content: a short, direct answer at the top of the page.
- Rankings vs mentions: you measure how often you're mentioned, not what position you're in.
- One Google vs many models: each AI draws differently — you need to watch them all.
Why you don't choose
Customers use both channels. Google didn't die; AI was added. Ignoring GEO leaves you invisible in a fast-growing part of search.
Where to start
If you already have an SEO base, GEO is an extension: add answer-shaped content and FAQ schema, build authority signals, and measure your presence in AI to see where you fall short.
Frequently asked questions
If I already do SEO, am I covered for GEO?
Partly. The SEO base helps, but GEO needs answer-shaped content and measurement of your presence in the models — it's different work.
Will GEO replace SEO?
Not in the foreseeable future. They coexist; part of the traffic simply moves toward AI answers.
Which should I prioritize?
Keep SEO and add GEO. Start by measuring where you stand in AI, to see how urgent it is.
