What is GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) and why it matters for your business

Updated: 15 July 2026

GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) is the practice of making your business visible in the answers of AI assistants — ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini. Just as SEO got you ranked on Google, GEO determines whether AI recommends you or your competitor when a customer asks “who should I choose?”.

Search has changed

Until yesterday, a customer looking for a supplier typed into Google and saw ten links. Today, more and more ask ChatGPT directly: “who's the best X in Thessaloniki?”, “where should I buy Y?”, “who can I trust for Z?”.

And AI doesn't hand back ten links to choose from. It gives one answer, with two or three names inside a single paragraph. If yours isn't there, the customer won't look further — they'll take the first recommendation.

What GEO actually is

GEO means structuring your presence so language models understand you, trust you, and mention you when they answer commercial questions. It's not a trick; it's becoming the obvious, well-supported answer for what you do.

In practice, AI draws on three things: structured content it can read (clear pages, definitions, FAQs), authority signals (reviews, third-party mentions, listings), and consistency — your name being reliably tied to your category across the web.

GEO vs SEO: complementary, not rivals

SEO optimizes for a machine that returns links. GEO optimizes for a machine that returns answers. Many foundations are shared (clean content, authority, technical health), but the logic differs: in GEO you're not fighting for position #1 — you're fighting to be inside the one paragraph the customer reads.

Why it matters for every business

If anyone would ever ask an AI “who should I choose for X?”, then it applies to you. E-shops, consultants, doctors and clinics, lawyers, hotels, local services — everyone is now judged through AI answers too, not just organic results.

How to start

Three steps, in order:

  • Measure where you stand today — how often ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini mention you for your own keywords.
  • Find the gaps — which questions ignore you and which competitors show up in your place.
  • Build signals — structured content, reviews, mentions — and re-measure every month, because the models keep changing.

Frequently asked questions

Does GEO replace SEO?

No. They're complementary. SEO keeps you visible on Google; GEO makes you visible in AI answers. Customers use both.

Do I need to “be inside” ChatGPT?

You don't register anywhere. Models draw from the public web. The goal is for your content and authority signals to be strong enough that AI mentions you naturally.

How fast do results show?

Changes usually take a few weeks to appear in answers, because models refresh their data periodically. That's why continuous monitoring matters, not a one-off check.
